MTB in Autumn: 6 MAGURA Tips for cooler days!

The weather is bad: it's cold, wet and uncomfortable. After a warm summer, only a few mountain bikers are regularly going back to the trails in autumn.

If your motivation starts to decline, here are six valuable tips for you on how to extend your biking season into the winter! Find the right autumn clothing, equip your mountain bike with the right parts and have fun while training!

TIP 1: OPT FOR DURABILITY.

This autumn, avoid unpleasant surprises in next spring’s bike check by investing in components that can last. Robust bearings or a good second running wheel can lower the risk of defects.

MAGURA’s #customizeyourbrake program also offers various brake pads to optimize your setup. If you’re in doubt, durable SPORT or COMFORT pads are your best choice.

For more fun on slippery trails, we also recommend a setup that lets you do some fine tuning. The HC3 lever blade with Ratio Adjust allows you to reduce your braking power slightly on slippery trails and get a finer degree of modulation. You’ll find it easier to locate that sweet spot between a slipping wheel and a strong grip.

The HC3 lever was developed with Danny MacAskill so that he could continually adjust his brake to conditions on Scotland’s varying terrain. Try it! (available for MAGURA models with a Carbotecture SL® brake master, from MY2015)

TIP 2: PREFER TRACTION TO A RACING SETUP.

Trails that are a piece of cake in summer can easily become treacherous in autumn. That’s when it’s time to switch from tires with low rolling resistance to big-volume tires with a good grip. Likewise, crosscountry racers should put away their semi-slick tires and select deep-treaded touring tires for better control.

TIP 3: KEEP WARM.

"There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing" – worn-out wisdom maybe, but there’s truth in it. In autumn, you should wear several layers of clothing with good ventilation especialy on uphill stretches and so you're protected from the cold on descents. Nothing is worse than starting a descent when you’re sweaty. The MAGURA Primaloft jacket is lined in the front to protect you against the cold but fits in a small space so that you can stow it in a hip bag or backpack.

TIP 4: DON’T FORGET TO GIVE YOUR BIKE SOME LOVING CARE.

In autumn, bike care is especially important. Keep the parts free of mud and dirt, and make sure that moving parts like the drive and suspension are regularly maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Liqui Moly Bike-Cleaner, chain cleaner and chain oil will keep your bike in top condition. When you clean your bike, make sure that the rotor is not contaminated by oil or similar substances.

TIP 5: LENGTHEN THE DAY.

A good set of lights can extend your ride time into the evening! While riding on public highways, remember that you must use lighting that is approved for use on the road so that you don’t blind oncoming traffic. It’s for your own safety. The new Supernova lights with integrated low and high beams make evening trail rides a lot safer. You’ll find a selection of great lighting products at www.supernova-lights.com

TIP 6: HAVE FUN!

Finally and most important, put Strava and other kinds of tracking out of your mind. Ride to have fun. Practice your technique on slippery trails or compete with friends. Trips on cold days can be a chance to enjoy company. Chat while you ride or stop on the way for a warm drink. It will lift everyone’s spirits. Riding together makes even bad weather bearable.
