"The big advantage of disc brakes is that they are maintenance free". You can read and hear comments like this pretty often. Sorry, but this information is rather misleading. When it comes to the ease of maintenance the decisive point is not whether you have a rim or a disc brake, but which transmission principle is used to actuate the brake. There is no remaining doubt about the fact that cables and their housings are maintenance intensive, above all on a long term. Every serious rider knows: cables suck! Cable activated and also semi hydraulic disc brakes are suffering consequently from these weaknesses. Their only advantage is the lower price. Function wise those disc brakes cannot even compete with an excellent hydraulic rim brake such as the MAGURA HS 33. Because a good long-term function of a product has always been a crucial point for us at MAGURA it has been out of question to even think about a cable actuated disc brake.
When it comes to the a/m advantages of a hydraulic brake system you have to consider mainly what sort of transmission medium is used in your brake, mineral oil or DOT brake fluid.
All MAGURA disc brakes have been a long time the only disc brakes which could be described as virtually maintenance free. The same information is of course also valid for the MAGURA rim brakes. With the exception of the regular pad wear check and a replacement in due time there is nothing to do for you as ALL our disc brake models feature since model year 2002 an automatic pad wear adjustment like the brake system of your car or your motorcycle.
The real asset, offered over years by MAGURA alone (and in the meantime copied by a Japanese company), is that our stoppers use low viscosity MAGURA Royal Blood mineral oil as transmission medium which does not absorb water and actually lubricates the whole system.
All other competitors' disc brakes use aggressive DOT brake fluid (used normally in car and motorcycle braking systems). DOT has to be changed regularly because it absorbs water, even the water vapor in the air inside your open system's brake reservoir. This has a negative effect on the brake's function. The bleeding of such brakes is then regularly necessary, but not funny at all. DOT is toxic, irritates your skin and strips the paint off your frame when you don't pay attention.
Do you really want to be bothered with problems like that? Choose the tricky, troublefree and clean solution: Rely on MAGURAs, if you prefer riding to wrenching. and remember for the case of the cases that MAGURA Royal Blood is much more bike oriented and nicer stuff to deal with. MAGURA brake technology. Simple solutions for smart bikers. Save the planet!
Disc brakes do not pack up with mud, snow or ice and ensure an unchanged, unmatched brake power in all weather conditions. You will have no delayed brake reaction with a disc brake when you ride in the wet, but always the same reliable brake power as in dry weather conditions. You always have unchanged brake power which no longer depends on the quality of the rim wall (e.g. insufficiently finished rim joint causing jerky braking). The rim brake FAQ "which brake pad do I need for this type of rim" is not applicable here, because both the brake and the rotor are coming from MAGURA.
Consequence: always optimum brake pad compound offering incredible stopping power in all weather conditions. You can keep on riding even if your wheel goes out of true. No inner tube bursts because of overheated rims.
Easier wheel removal compared to canti, V- or hydraulic brakes. No risk of worn rim wall which can bring cause a wheel to collaps leading to accidents with potential serious consequences for you and others.
MAGURA has been known as the leader when it comes to a top notch service. How often a tiny spare part is the reason for a lot of trouble? With MAGURA you do not have to bother with that, rely on us and the MAGURA Passion Point dealers*
(*Passion Point Dealer networks do not exist in every country!)
ATTENTION: We stipulate clearly and precisely that for all our products only GENUINE MAGURA brake pads and and accessories must be used! Otherwise the 5-year leakproof warranty and all warranty claims in respect to MAGURA will become null and void! Pay attention when buying new pads that they are the genuine ones from MAGURA that can be easily checked.

The MAGURA Gustav M disc brake is by the way the only disc brake for which the manufacturer gives OFFICIALLY the green light for tandem use!
